The Importance of a Good Keyword Tool

I wanted to make a quick post today regarding the importance of using good tools, and in particular, a good keyword tool.

When starting new projects or expanding current projects, you need to know where you stand with regards to the competition. For example, if a keyword has 1,000,000 competing pages and you want to rank for it quickly, you probably won’t go after that keyword.

In a similar way you also need to know the approximate traffic counts for both SEO and PPC for your keywords. There’s no use in going after a keyword thats only going to give you 1 or 2 visitors per month. As a general rule I only go after a keyword if it has a monthly traffic count of at least 1000 (unless I’m going after a a product name or persons name).

Another thing that you need to know is how much people are paying when using PPC for each keyword. This data allows you to make a couple of assumptions. Firstly, if someone is paying $5 per click, chances are that the keyword is very valuable and good search rankings will convert if you have the right product on offer. Secondly, keywords that have very low CPC (cost per clicks) have lower value – people aren’t bidding as high on them for a reason you know!

That covers a few basic bits of information that I take into account when performing keyword research. I have used a heap of tools to do keyword research and have only ever really been happy with a couple – they are Market Samurai and Traffic Travis.

Why do I like these two tools so much? Simple – they provide ACCURATE information in an EASY TO USE format. They are also both designed by internet marketers who use them on a day to day basis meaning they are always updated with the latest functions etc.

I hope you’ve found this post useful – and remember to make sure the numbers add up before targeting any keyword!

  1. Don’t forget about the all-important Google Adwords Tool. You can get search frequency (even separated by region), CPC data and more for free using this tool.

Also, I agree with what you said about minimum search frequency — 1,000 exact searches on Google/month or it’s not worth going after. I would say minimum $1 CPC as well.

  3. Your absolutely right Aidan, finding a good keyword tool is essential and key to the success of anyone’s websites. If the keyword tool that a person uses is not adequate, that person risks their whole business basically. Most of the process to building an effective website is in the beginning with research and the free Google keyword tool works great for me right now.
